Understanding Mahr (Dowry): Rules, Amounts and Examples

The mahr is the bride\u2019s right and a beautiful part of the nikah — but it is widely misunderstood. What is it, how much should it be, and what counts? A clear guide.

The mahr is one of the most beautiful and most misunderstood parts of an Islamic marriage. It is the bride right, a gift from the groom to her, and it belongs to her alone. Here is what you need to know.

What Is the Mahr?

The mahr (sometimes called sadaq) is an obligatory gift the groom gives to the bride as part of the marriage. It is mentioned directly in the Quran. It is not a price for the bride, and it is not paid to her family; it is her personal property to keep, spend, or save as she wishes.

How Much Should It Be?

There is no fixed amount in Islam. The mahr should be meaningful but not a burden. The Prophet (peace be upon him) taught that the best marriages are the easiest, and he discouraged excessive demands that delay or prevent marriage. It can be agreed between the couple based on what is reasonable for their situation.

What Can Be Given as Mahr?

  • Money or gold.
  • Property or other valuable assets.
  • In some cases, a non-material benefit, such as teaching the bride Quran, as in a famous hadith.

The point is that it has real value and is agreed willingly.

Prompt and Deferred Mahr

The mahr can be paid:

  • Immediately (muajjal), given at the time of the nikah.
  • Deferred (muwajjal), paid later or in the event of divorce or death, as agreed.

Many couples split it: part now, part deferred. Whatever is agreed should be clear and documented.

It Is the Bride Right, Always

A few important reminders: the mahr belongs to the wife, not her parents. It should not be taken from her without her free consent. And demanding an unreasonable mahr that prevents marriage goes against the Prophetic guidance of making marriage easy.
