Istikhara for Marriage: How to Pray It and Read the Signs
Salat al-Istikhara is how Muslims ask Allah for guidance in big decisions like marriage. Here is exactly how to pray it — and how to understand the outcome.
When facing a major decision like marriage, Islam gives us a beautiful tool: salat al-istikhara, the prayer of seeking guidance. Yet many Muslims are unsure how to pray it or how to understand what happens afterwards. This guide clears it up.
What Istikhara Is and Is Not
Istikhara is not fortune-telling, and it does not require seeing a dream. It is simply asking Allah, who knows what you do not, to guide you towards what is good and turn you away from what is harmful, then trusting His decree. It is an act of humility and reliance, not a magic answer.
When to Pray It
Pray istikhara when you are genuinely considering a specific decision, for example, a particular person for marriage, and you have already done your practical research. It is best done after gathering information and consulting trusted, wise people (this consultation is called istishara).
How to Pray It, Step by Step
- Pray two voluntary rakahs (not at a forbidden time), with the intention of istikhara.
- After completing the prayer, raise your hands and recite the dua of istikhara, which is found in Bukhari.
- Where the dua mentions this matter, bring your specific decision to mind, for example, the marriage you are considering.
- Make sincere dua in your own words too, asking Allah for clarity and a good outcome.
Understanding the Outcome
There is no single sign. Often, istikhara works by Allah making the path easier or harder, opening doors or closing them, and settling or unsettling your heart over time. You do not need to wait for a dream. Continue taking sensible steps, and trust that Allah is guiding the outcome, even if it is not what you first wanted.
Repeat and Rely
You may repeat istikhara if you remain uncertain. Whatever unfolds afterwards, meet it with contentment, knowing you asked the One who knows best. Pair your prayer with action: the believer makes effort and places trust in Allah.
